BWH’s Martha Jurchak, PhD, RN, CS, Jeffrey Karp, PhD, Jo Shapiro, MD, and John Wright, MD, are among this year’s Boston Business Journal 2011 Champions in Healthcare.
The annual awards honor leading professionals who are making major contributions to health care in Massachusetts. The recipients will be honored during a ceremony Aug. 26.
“Please join me in congratulating our BWH winners, who serve as true leaders in their respective fields through commitment to excellence and service to others,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD.
Jurchak, executive director of Ethics Service, is honored in the “Nurse” category. Known throughout the hospital as the voice of clinical ethics, she is a skilled facilitator who engages those with divergent views in highly complex patient care dilemmas. She has an exquisite ability to facilitate an ethical discussion among care providers, patients and families and to create a mutually respectful, compassionate, safe space for everyone’s voice to be heard.
Karp, co-director of Regenerative Therapeutics in the Biomedical Research Institute, was selected in the “Innovator” category. Karp constantly pushes the boundaries of science to improve patient care, whether it’s by mimicking the skin of geckos to help patients heal faster after surgery, harnessing nanotechnology to treat skin-based allergies and arthritis, or improve upon existing medical devices to deliver pinpoint accuracy and prevent painful complications.
Shapiro, chief of the Division of Otolaryngology, was honored in the “Administrator” category for her work in establishing and directing BWH’s Center for Professionalism and Peer Support. The center is a national model with an ultimate goal of providing compassionate, high quality patient care by reinforcing standards for professionalism, supporting providers across every discipline when they are at their most vulnerable and helping to protect them against burnout and emotional impairment.
In the “Physician” category, Wright, attending surgeon and director of Performance Improvement in the Department of Orthopedics, was recognized for his work the past four years to re-examine knee replacement surgeries at BWH and pioneer change both in the way patients are cared for and in the way the medical team thinks about providing this care.
